Dom Justo Takayama – the Filipino Samurai

Dom Justo Takayama (1552February 4, 1615) was a kirishitan daimyo who followed Christianity in the Sengoku period of Japan.

Takayama Justo was born to be the heir of Takayama Tomoteru, the lord of Sawa Castle in the Yamato Province. His name as a child was Hikogorō (彦五郎). At the age of 12 (1564), his father converted to Catholicism and Hikogorō was also baptized Justo. After his coming-of-age ceremony, Hikogorō was named Shigetomo (重友). However, he is better known as Takayama Ukon (高山右近). The name Ukon comes from the government post he pretended, the officer of Ukonoefu. (This was usual practice among samurai of the time.)

Justo and his father fought through the turbulent age to secure their position as a daimyo. They managed to acquire Takatsuki Castle (Takatsuki, Osaka) under Oda Nobunaga and also under Toyotomi Hideyoshi, at least in the first years of his rule. During their domination of Takatsuki Region, Justo and his father Dario pushed their policy as Kirishitan daimyo (Christian daimyo) forward. Many of his fellows converted under his influence.

However, Toyotomi Hideyoshi grew against Christianity and, in 1587, he ordered expulsion of missionaries. While many daimyo obeyed this order and discarded Catholicism, Justo proclaimed that he would maintain his religion and rather give up his land and property.

Justo lived under protection of his friends for several decades, but following the 1614 prohibition of Christianity by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the ruler of the time, he was expelled from Japan. On November 8, 1614, together with 300 Japanese Christians he left his home country from Nagasaki. He arrived at Manila on December 21 and was greeted warmly by the Spanish Jesuits and the local Filipinos there.

The Spanish Philippines offered its assistance in overthrowing the Japanese government by invasion to protect Japanese Catholics. Justo declined to participate, and died of illness just 40 days afterwards.

At that time, the Spaniards referred to the Paco Area as the “Yellow Plaza” because of the more than 3,000 Japanese who resided there. Plaza Dilao is the last vestige of the old town of Paco.

There is a statue of Dom Justo Takayama in Plaza Dilao, Manila. Justo appears in the statue wearing warrior robes with his hair tied in a knot. He is carrying a sword that is pointed downward, upon which hangs a figure of a crucified Jesus.

When he died in 1615, the Spanish government interred him with a Christian burial with full military honors as a Daimyo. He is the first Daimyo to be buried in Philippine soil.

After Japan lost the last war, they signed a treaty that stated that Japan was not allowed to form an army of humans. But there was nothing in the treaty mentioning that Japan wasn’t allowed to form an army of Gundams…

The Japanese Ministry of Defense is holding a Defense Technology Symposium where part of the program covers “Towards the realization of Gundam” – the program is available in PDF format on the “http://www.mod.go.jp/trdi/infomation/happyou/main.htm” page.
1st pic from above is a snap of the PDF file showing “Towards The Realization Of Gundam (Advanced Personal Equipment Systems)” which kinda stipulates some sort of walker suit but you never know…

Japan’s Coast Guard warns Chinese activists heading to disputed islands

TOKYO (XFN-ASIA) – Japan’s Coast Guard has dispatched patrol ships and aircraft after spotting a boat carrying Chinese activists to a group of disputed islands claimed by Japan, China and Taiwan.

‘We have spotted a boat near the Japanese territorial sea on the western side of the islands,’ said a coast guard official based in the southern Japanese island chain of Okinawa.

The Coast Guard has sent patrol ships and planes to the area and given warnings to the boat, said the official. He declined to say how many vessels and aircraft were dispatched.

The boat carrying four Chinese activists protesting against Japan’s control over the islands — called the Senkaku Islands in Japan and Diaoyu in China, which lie between Taiwan and Japan — set off Friday from China’s Fujian province, Jiji Press reported.

The activists tried to land on the islands but were blocked by the Japanese coast guard, it said.

Japan claimed the islands in 1895 but they were temporarily put under US control after World War II and returned to Japan in 1972 together with Okinawa.

In the early 1970s China and Taiwan made claims to the islands after oil deposits were confirmed in the area by a United Nations agency.

In March 2004 Japanese authorities arrested and deported seven Chinese activists after they went to the islands, causing a diplomatic row with Beijing.

We were under the impression that Japan was so awesome crime didn’t exist there. Unfortunately, it does. To ward off criminals, fashion designer Aya Tsukioka has conjured up some neat transforming clothes/accessories to deceive potential muggers. Whether there would be time to get your kit out in an attack is probably something we would not want to test out, but the concept makes for one kick-ass gallery; check it out below:
