Shiki review

I just finished watching another anime called Shiki.

Plot: Sotobamura is a small village with around 1300 residents; so small the village isn’t even connected to a single highway. An isolated village in which old customs, such as the burial of the dead, are still practiced. One day, the bodies of three people are found dead. Although Ozaki Toshio, the village’s lone doctor, feels uncertain, he treats the deaths as a normal occurrence. However, in the days following, the villagers start to die one after the other.

My Turn: Having 22 episodes in all, I find this anime very amusing. Remember the anime Ghost Hound I reviewed way back when? Well, this anime kind of have the same feel into it. When I first saw this anime, I was thinking of dropping it but a couple of more episodes later, it “sucked” me in. The story is very interesting and I think the creators wants it to be a mind boggling kind of anime kind of like Ghost Hound. This one is very bloody indeed and when you get around the climax of the anime, that’s where all the good stuff and all the mind boggling stuff happens. The thing I don’t like about it is the ending. Watch it and see for your self.  I will give this anime a 8/10.

Outrage movie

Here is a movie by Takeshi Kitano. It’s another Yakuza movie and it is awesome!!

Here is a synopsis of the movie :

“Takeshi Kitano (aka Beat Takeshi) returns to his roots as a star and director with this edgy gangster tale. The Chairman (Soichiro Kitamura) is the head of the Sanno-kai crime family, Japan’s most powerful underworld syndicate, with his right-hand-man Ikemoto (Jun Kunimura) handling much of the crew’s daily business. The Chairman’s greatest rival is Murase (Renji Ishibashi), whose operation has made its money in drug peddling while the Sano-kai has been striving to move its operations into more legitimate schemes. The Chairman believes that Ikemoto has become too close to Murase for comfort, and he wants the two sides to distance themselves. Ikemoto, not wanting to dirty his hands with any unpleasantness, orders one of his mechanics, Otomo (Beat Takeshi), to deliver a few reminders that the two gangs are on opposite sides. What begins as some brutal but petty recriminations by Otomo and his crew against Murase’s underlings turns into a private war, and the violence on each side escalates with each exchange. Autoreiji (aka Outrage) received its world premiere at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival.” ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Korea now using robots to teach their kids English

Apparently there’s a real shortage of affordable English teachers in South Korea, so they’re now testing a robot called Engkey to connect their students to cheaper teachers in the Philippines

Unlike that Japanese version , the rotund little Engkey robot doesn’t really look very human, although it will roam around the classroom talking to students, and can do a little dance. One weird feature is that instead of a face, Engkey has a black and white TV screen with a Caucasian teacher’s face.

While the robots cost about $10,000 each, the developer points out that they don’t need health care, sick leave, or vacation pay, and they aren’t likely to take off for a better paying gig in Japan. Better not let the American Federation of Teachers hear about that part.
